Who Can Perform Aesthetic Procedures in New York?

New York allows licensed physicians (MDs and DOs), dentists, nurse practitioners (NPs), physician assistants (PAs), and registered nurses (RNs) to perform aesthetic injectable procedures, including botox and dermal filler treatments, within their established scope of practice.

New York is classified as a reduced practice state for nurse practitioners. NPs must maintain a collaborative agreement with a physician in order to practice, which includes performing injectable aesthetic procedures. These practice requirements are governed by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) through the Office of the Professions. Physician assistants must also practice under physician supervision. Registered nurses in New York may administer botox, dermal fillers, and other aesthetic injectables only under the direct delegation and supervision of a licensed physician, and cannot perform these procedures independently.
